That may be the case in some jurisdictions. But I think it can also
have a lot to do with how the Amateur radio operators represent
themselves when they meet with government officials.
For cripes sake DO NOT show up at a meeting looking like you crawled
out of a hole you just dug in your back yard for a new tower.
Turn off, and keep out of site, whatever radio's you might have on you
during those meetings.
If you think the word, "Amateur" conjures up disrespect, then present
yourself as a member of "R.A.C.E.S.", "A.R.E.S." or whatever emergency
communications oriented group you belong to.
Yes, the A stands for Amateur in both of those, but the E and S stand
for Emergency and Service.
Don't try to impress the officials with your technical prowess, and
don't brag about how many repeaters you have. Talk about what your
group can do to help the community and government entities during
emergencies.
