Rich--
EAS activations are being sent, received and rebroadcast, at least on Hawai'i Public Radio. My station is on Kaua'i and I think I've rebroadcast only one warning for the island but we receive the watches and warnings for the state and Central Pacific so the staff knows what's happening in other areas. It looks like the brunt of Lane will pass south of us and most likely at Tropical Storm strength. Still, there will be lots of rain and damaging winds. The staff has done interviews with local officials and PHFO/NWS staff all week. Google Star 94.3 to catch the latest info.
It seems to me that Hawai'i EMA was a little behind the curve-or cone-on this storm. The state emergency manager was telling people today to be prepared to spend two weeks without power or water. It's a little late to tell people that when the store shelves are stripped bare and supply ships and cargo planes can't get into the islands. The appropriate time for that warning would have been last week, when Lane was named and the first forecasts for landfall identified. I guess they didn't want the tourists to cancel their vacations.
