There is another issue here -

Chances are excellent that those that are promoting this really have not
experienced a cellphone with an FM receiver.

> Many of these depend on the use of an ear-bud with the cable for same
functioning as an antenna. Not likely a cellphone maker would compromise
their competitive form factor for a built in antenna.

> How would you tune the radio, what kind of display would it have etc

> What kind of sensitivity and/or selectivity would the receiver have?

> What are the odds that the FM station you are able to receive will have
meaningful information applicable to your situation (and not be a satellite
fed religious broadcaster etc)

> How is the user going to know what frequency to tune to in their area.

I was involved with a group (conference calls) very early in this
process....I think I got disconnected because I kept finding faults that
they did not wish to hear.

A big problem with Apple's responses is that they are not being as
forthcoming as they should on their own products (some may indeed have FM
chips, some not. Some may have antenna links though internally not
connected; some may not).

Problem with the other side - it's not so simple with Apple - as above, the
status of their FM chips is all over the place. Also, Apple is absolutely
manic about power drains on its product - which is likely one reason their
engineers have not allowed connection of the FM chips. FM chips may be
physically present, but it may be far beyond just a matter of software to
enable them in some (many??) Apple products.

And, for current/future Apple iPhones, there is not even an antenna jack
anyway. Making this kind of a moot point going forward.
