There was much the same criticism of Central Maine Power after the Maine Ice Storm of 1998 (we were without power for 8 days at home, many were without for 14+ days, and a couple of broadcast towers collapsed). The weather service called it a 500-year event. It's not practical to bury so much power line underground in a rural state, which is the only way to protect against "fragility" in such an extreme event. Lesson learned: Preparedness. Not extreme apocalyptic survivalism, but it's good to have two weeks of food and water, a couple of Life Straws, a source of light, an alternative heat source and cooking source, and at least two weeks of CLEAN UNDERWEAR. :). And remember, in an emergency, cash is king.
