Art--
Ask the "regular" people in your life about their information habits. I started asking around last summer and was shocked by the answers I received. My own darling daughter, who lives in your Earthquake Country, used to turn off the phone and put it in the nightstand drawer, until I went all Mommy on her.

A fellow cardiac rehab patient was the same way. She also did not watch TV or keep up with much local news. She had no idea what was at her fingertips on the iPhone her son gave her for Christmas. At least it was enabled for WEA messages but she didn't know she could get local news alerts and information on it too. She doesn't keep it in the dresser anymore.

My brother doesn't answer the landline phone at their house when his wife is gone. They keep their cell phone turned off and in a drawer. They live in an area where there were a lot of fires last summer. They also got The Lecture from Big Sis.

As for charging, apparently most people check the phone in the morning and plug it in while they get ready for work. Their phone batteries don't run down that much because they don't use all the apps we emergency geeks do.

You and I can't imagine living any other way because that's how we're made. It's in our genes and our phones are always in our jeans. I have almost 40--yes--four-zero--news and emergency apps on my phone. And I'm basically retired from everything but EAS. My phone produces a constant cacophony of bells, buzzes, riffs and tones and just like when I used to sleep with the scanner turned on, I can tell in my sleep which sounds require attention and which are "normal" and don't need immediate attention--earthquake alerts vs email. My husband, not so much. I have to keep the volume low!
