Thank you for stating that Mike. I'm recalling what a seismologist said
several months ago at a summit on seismic warning systems - that such a
warning system - even if its mere seconds of warning, could have a
significant impact. For example, things that haven't been discussed are
systems that automatically throw open doors of firehouses, ambulance depots,
etc... so first responder vehicles are not stuck in building if the doors
are cast askew. Or for hospitals, providing a warning to surgical staff -
e.g. a "knives up" warning.
Is broadcasting part of this low-latency warning capability? Maybe, maybe
not. Certainly not EAS for the really fast EEW alert. Probably not WEA
either. Both systems have their role, but it would likely be after that
low-latency EEW alarm.
I would hope that - since Congress, White House and FCC have put some energy
into this discussion - they have considered actually funding serious study
of what is and isn't achievable.
