Thanks, great idea and permitted under the current EAS rules,
Part 11.47 Optional use of other communications methods and systems.
Currently digital channels must still transmit the AFSK data header
in-band, even when they use digital control. Digital channels could flip
it around and use digital control only, e.g. SCTE, ATSC, IP, etc. My
suggestion is the AFSK squawks would be optional over those digital
communication channels.
You could still use terrestrial channels as a backup daisy-chain
using the digital control information. But you avoid the problems
that happen with in-band analog signalling.
Again, I'm not suggesting using only Internet. But changing from
analog modem tones to digital control channels via satellite,
cable, digital tv, IPTV, etc.
