[snip]

Canada now has an "EAS", called the National Public Alerting System (NPAS), also known as "AlertReady".
Information on the system, including an audio file of the alert tone that is used, is at: www.AlertReady.ca

Very interesting when you look at the types of natural events that are processed. Among others, there are alerts for "magnetic storm" and "meteorite". Remember the damages caused to Hydro-Quebec in March of 1989? Here are two definitions:

Magnetic Storm

A worldwide disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field that can disable electronic devices and infrastructure.

Meteorite

A natural object of extraterrestrial origin (meteoroid) that survives passage through the atmosphere and hits the ground with the potential for catastrophic damage.

I was not able to play the alerting tone. No idea if it matches the USA two-tone attention signal. Assuming the Canadian tone is different, should the FCC make it an offence to broadcast this tone stateside? Many Canadians watch USA television. We're both ATSC.
