Some of you may be missing vital points about both the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and the role of old fashioned AM , FM and television broadcasting in public warnings.
Over a decade ago CAP was envisioned as an open source non-proprietary international standard by the Partnership for Public Warning, Inc (PPW) as a tool to originate warnings over all CAP-compliant warning systems.
Today social media and for-profit warning providers seem to some to have eclipsed the role of traditional broadcasting.
What some are forgetting is the broad base and resilience of traditional broadcasting that occasionally gets some press when disasters cripple the Internet and/or deprive the public of utility power for lengthy periods.
The PPW was a strong and agnostic advocate for all viable warning systems working together to serve a public at risk as best possible no matter what damage a disaster does to our communications infrastructure.
