Greetings:
Some of you may have already seen the article I wrote that Radio World published today in its online edition. At the end, it refers readers to the URL for this, the EAS Forum, as a source for the exchange of ideas on emergency public warning issues. I believe that the BWWG has in this Forum created a great vehicle for doing exactly that. Many of your ideas have translated into messages we have successfully conveyed to those who need to hear them most. However, our work is far from over.
I make comments in the article about where we need to go to correct not only known deficiencies in the EAS, but also to the underlying reality that the United States still does not have a coherent national warning strategy. Such a strategy must embrace and guide a process that begins with the emergency management communities.
The process should employ all viable warning systems, including the EAS, all working together, until a public at risk during emergencies can have greater assurance that they will receive timely and effective protective information that can help to save more lives and property.
I would be very interested in comments, pro and con, regarding the article (or here) to see if there is support for ideas I present in the article, or thoughts on how we can better refine all ideas for improvement.
A core premise: Overhaul to the public warning process must involve all viable warning systems working together to better protect a public at risk.
I will be attending a national emergency management conference in September where I hope to plant some seeds for warning improvement based on ideas that we discuss in this Forum.
No one said it would be easy, but we should not give up.
Regards,
