Here at KXLY in Spokane our Studio has an 80kw UPS for mission critical areas. It runs TV master control and 5 radio studios including STL's and satellite receivers. While it would only last about 5 minutes our generator is on line in about 15 seconds. The 800 kw generator powers everything. (Normal load is around 250 kw) No air time lost. The only way anyone at home would know there was an outage is if it happens during live TV news. The cameras stay on but the studio lights except for a couple will be off for 15 seconds. All of our 7 transmitter site generators will power the entire building except one that isn't big enough for the A/C compressors. That site switches to economizer and cools with outside air.

3 of our sites we can manually lock the generator on so it doesn't switch back to commercial power until we want it to. Live news casts etc.

We have a diesel distributer in the area that will pump out diesel tanks and refill with fresh diesel. The cost is about 50 cents a gallon plus an hourly rate.

It appears that original thread got, sort of, "hijacked," so I will start a new one if we're going to carry on about backup power.

I'd sure be interested to hear how others handle their backup power.
