@Cody
To be honest - I haven't even figured our network completely out!
I'm an RF Engineer with decent computer skills (meaning I can network, and
program in several languages), that has been put in the position of getting
DASDECs from all across the country to work. We have a somewhat ad-hoc Juniper
based VPN that is, to say the least bit, incomplete. We have stations that
don't even have internet connectivity yet, and others that aren't on the VPN,
etc. We have some units in semi-remote places that are sending me emails, but I
still don't have access in to see them even. We also have some kind of
agreement with Microsoft where they host our email off site (not going into the
particulars as to why.... it is a long sordid story).
I'm a *nix fan from way back, and would rather simply not run Exchange server,
but I'm not in charge of IT around here - so I have to work within the web that
has been woven around me (pardon the pun).
Yes, your situation would be ideal, however - at present - our IT Department
isn't ready to deploy that particular method yet, and hence I've found that
(from my perch) if those particular ports don't have access to the internet -
the DASDEC fails to send emails, connect properly to FEMA, etc. There may be
others out there with similar issues, which is why I forwarded the ports we
open.
Long story short - every situation is going to be somewhat different, but the
DASDEC itself does require certain ports to see certain places, and if GMAIL is
your email solution, you are going to need to have an open port to see it.
Sent from my LINUX (Android) Cell Phone!
Don't drink the microsoft cool-aid
