Another problem could be what if Google decided to bail out of this after a couple of years as they did with radio ad sales and Google Automation because it wasn't making them enough money? Not that they are launching public alerts as a revenue stream. But Google could decide later to drop the service for whatever reason.

We as a society need to start paying attention to Google and it's actions
muchy the same as AT&T, MS, Exxon, Shell, BP, and other dominant industry
players. It's quietly becoming something of a "too big to fail" entity and
is seriously encroaching on Microsoft and other prior dominant players in
several key areas of computing. Between the Andriod OS, Chrome, and GMail,
they have already eclipsed MS in the mobile sector never mind their
domiance in the search engine world.

I expect at some point, Google's activities will get into the cross hairs
of the DoJ and something anti-trust will come about as a result. I'm not
saying Googe is bad now. But if we think MS, Clear Channel, Cumulus or the
banks are the evil empire, I don't think they will hold a candle to Google
should Google become a dominant player more broadly speaking.

What I'm saying is...be careful as the bed being made might be quietly
supplied by Google.
