Hi Adrienne - We fought this battle last year, and, while some language did make it into the law books, we were able to convince the proponents NOT to use EAS. Our chief arguments were that the FCC has approved CAE for Amber but there is no corresponding code for other missing persons, and that, aside from Amber, EAS should be used only for widespread incidents that affect a large number of people, and when you open the door for it to be used for individuals, where does that stop, people get inured to the alerts, it becomes like the car-alarm syndrome, etc. etc. Utah actually has a pretty good model for a Silver Alert program - one that does not use EAS.

Our legislature is considering a bill to create a "Silver Alert" that would
use EAS to broadcast information about missing seniors. The backers of this
legislation say the measure is "similar to the AMBER Alert for missing
children". How many of you have Silver Alerts in your state? How many of you
have Silver Alerts that use EAS in your state? Do you know how many EAS
activations there have been in your state for Silver Alerts?
Adrienne
