[BC] Commercial transmitter disasters....

In 1965 I visited KELP in El Paso, TX.  They had a Gates Vanguard 1
transmitter sitting unused... They had NO kind words to say about it, and it
is my recollection the Vanguard 1 was considered an abysmal failure (and
power hog).

Was it?  Do any still exist?

Were their other transmitters that were considered failures?  I think Sparta
had some real issues with their first solid state transmitter, hearsay?  And
I've heard less than kind words about the RCA Amplifuzz, but  10kW AM is the
highest power I have experience with (at KHEY in El Paso, but as a meter
reader combo man for a few weeks while stationed at Fort Bliss).

I had a 2.5kW McMartian transmitter I had a love hate relationship with, it
was just Okay.
