I dunno about Ampliphase, but there are cellphone amp designs that use a Doherty amplifier.
Which reminds me, have you ever looked at the Regulinear(TM) modulator design used in the CEC 315B which screen modulated 4CX5000s ?

So far, I've never noticed anything overdesigned about an SX-1.
