Yup, tube rigs are like that compared to transistors unless you're talking
about LDMOS amplifiers that can handle even more abuse than tubes!

I had a somewhat similar incident once wherein a Harris SX-1 would
periodically go into fold-back spasms.  One day I put the old BC-1T on the
air and it sat there at full output.  I went out to the ATU shack and sure
enough in the dark I could see arcing from a bad metering bypass switch.  I
bypassed it and put the SS rig back on the air.

Not sure,  there is something to be said about brute force.  There is the
story about vandals at KDKA way back when. During a Steelers game some took
