If cost is an issue (when is it not?) go low-end:  Recommend (1) the DBX-266 Compressor.  Inexpensive and effective. Includes squelch. Highly adjustable -- lots of knobs and switches. You can find them on eBay for under $100.  Or (2) for single-channel, simple operation, try the Behringer Shark DSP110 Signal Processor.  Just bought one.  It's a really cute little brick  Features mic or line I/O.  Got mine on eBay for $45 used. Works fine.Go for it, guy!
