My story is similar. My father was really into radio, and had
been since the early 30s. He was hooked on DX and that got me
hooked. I can remember riding with my father at night and
watching him "fiddle" with the radio dial as my mother called it.
He would sometimes tune in to stations I'd never heard of, and
he'd say something like, "Hey Rene', do hear that? That's KMOX is
St. Louis," or "That station is all the way out in San Antonio;
it's WOAI." We lived in SE New York State. WSM, WBZ, WOWO, WBBM,
KDKA, WWVA, WRVA, WCKY. All these, and so many other unknown call
letters from far away cities and towns got me hooked for life. I
still love to DX while riding at night, but of course with band
conditions and noise being what they are today, the experience is
not quite the same. It still draws me in, though ... and
sometimes drives my wife crazy.

>But what got me interested in radio is when my dad would turn on
our big Zenith radio on Saturday nights and we would all sit down
to listen to "The Grand Ole Opry" from WSM, then "The National
Barn Dance" on WLS, and sometimes "Louisiana Hayride" from KWKH
and some border-blaster like XELO or XERF. I thought it was cool
to listen to stations so far away.
