When I was an intern at a local station the PD asked me to splice together a
number of 5" reels of tape onto a 7" reel that they could use for
production. The reel-to-reel was an Ampex 600. The PD couldn't understand
why some spots sounded OK while others didn't. Sometimes the quality changed
mid recording.

Probably because the DSP-controlled automatic bias adjustment circuit in the
Ampex 600 wasn't working properly? :-) This was in the fall of 1972.
