No, he meant a variable autotransformer to dim the lights. You can eliminate the interference by using an autotransformer, which does not produce interference, instead of a solid state dimmer which would probably produce interference. The best way to eliminate a problem is to avoid creating that problem.

The best known brand name in variable autotransformers is the General Radio Variac. Other brands include the Instrument Service Equipment Variac (they trademaked it when the original trademark expired), the Powerstat, and the Varivolt.
