Steve:
Bingo! Smack on-the-nose, Steve. Car ads! Why would you be motivated to buy an expensive new car that's shown careening through dark city streets and the warehouse district by a guy with 5 O'clock shadow? Maybe it's targeted to drug gangs or Wall Street hedge fund thieves. The other one I get a kick out of is an attractive young woman driving at dawn through a city. The copy asks 'Wondering where I've been?' I figure she's a 'workin' girl' headed home after a night's 'work' (not a waitress). Maybe the Muppets ad is an attempt to have the kiddies tug at mom's apron and plead 'Please, please, please, mommy -- let's get a car with Muppets in it.' I wish my little business grossed the revenue those big agencies get for such bilge. Apple is in a class by itself -- their product brand loyalty is so good that they could sell poop on a Popsicle stick (iPoop) and gross a $billion the first day with lines waiting for their Apple stores to open. Only in America?
Best all-time car advertising was Dinah Shore singing 'See the USA in your Chevrolet' on her Dinah Shore Chevy Show. Reportedly, that song and program sold hundreds of millions of Chevys. Simple and direct, a forgotten art.
