Gary:
There are only 12 stations on 1660 in the continental US. That's the most
on any of the expanded band dial positions. 1620 also has 12.
1610 KHz has one, at Atlanta.
There were stations that turned back their main AM stations, including
Milwaukee, WI...but not many.
I'm a proponent, that the Commission should look at adding stations in
that part of the band, either by way of adding 5kw Non-D or allow
10kw directional, two-tower max, to fit.
We all remember why this was expanded, but funny they never saw past
their noses, back in the day, as there are no expanded band stations in
Alaska or Hawaii, which could have easily had three each, without any
problem.
It's also funny, that nobody seems to want to talk about 1705-1800 KHz,
either. Sure, it gets close to the Amateur Band of 160 meters.... but this
part of the dial is still reserved for 'directional location guidance'....which
has been replaced by $99 GPS units.

This move occurred when I was corporate engineer
of Triad Broadcasting. WVMI had a six tower (as I
recall) DA that was in terrible condition.
