In Eldorado, Texas - the fire whistle still "blows" every day at 12 noon
and has done that for at least the last 75 years or so.
For many years until she passed away, Ms. Wilson (who was crippled and
stayed at home for years) answered the telephone 24 hours a day and
sounded the Fire Whistle to call the Volunteer Firemen when there was a
fire. Schleicher County paid Ms. Wilson for her "duties".
She also sounded the "Fire Whistle" every day at noon.
To this day, the citizens all stop what they are doing and go to lunch
at the sound of the "Fire Whistle" at noon. Now, the Fire Whistle is
controlled by the Sheriff Department.
