That is indeed a classic! In my hometown of Glenside, Pa, northwest of
Philly, one fire station sounded the noon whistle and the other one across
town sounded one at 5 PM. There were no factories in town. Nobody had an
explanation, it was just always that way. When I moved away it seemed odd
there were no time whistles in town.
