[BC] The value of a microphone.

First, I will apologize as this is not actually a technical question so much
as it is a financial question.
I have a client who is asking for work costing a considerable amount of
money. For the sake of discussion, let's just say that it is between
$3,000.00 and $5,000.00. I am trying to (as amicably as possible) collect
payment on this without causing anyone any undue pain and suffering,
financial hardship, etc. Here is where we get into territory with which I am
unfamiliar.
The guy is very much into sound recording and has a professional recording
studio so, he is a little more into the "finer microphones" that am I so,
what he is offering is just a bit out of my usual area of knowledge. I know
all about Sure SM7's and Electrovoice RE-20's and all of the standard
"broadcast quality" microphones. In the meantime, this guy wants to pay me
by offering me a pair of Neumann TLM 170 microphones.
Yes, I've done some research and I see them listed on ebay and on various
profession equipment sales sites for $3,199.00 each and $6,199.00 for a pair
but, in real-life, what are these worth? I do not own a recording studio
(nor, do I plan to), I do not need anything as "above average" for day to
day production or on-air work so, I guess I would be looking at re-selling
them or, of nothing else, having yet another set of very expensive
paperweights. (I can tell you now that, if I put them in any studio near
here, they will grow legs and walk. It seems that every teenage kid in this
area has big dreams of building a home recording studio and, as best I can
tell, these would make for a rather impressive start.)
So, I guess my question is: If someone owes between $3,000.00 and $5,000.00,
would it be the opinion of anyone that his offer of the microphones as
payment would be a fair trade? Would anyone here accept something of this
nature and "call it even"? Is there a market for these so that they do not
sit on a shelf and accumulate dust? If there is such a market, what would it
be fair to ask for them? (They look like new and I have even played around
with them the last time I flew to the west coast.)
I guess I'm just looking for thoughts and suggestions or possible ideas that
may help me keep this from turning into a total loss.
Thanks in advance,
Keith Hammond
