James,
You are not listening to what I said. We all *know* <in flashing red> that skywave except in rare cases does not improve the bottom line. However in all cases every watt of that 50,000 watts at night is *far*, * f a r* more important at night to over come the skywave signals of other stations allowed on the frequency they occupy that supposedly doesn't cause interference that really does. A 1000 watt station on a clear can cause terrible interference to a station many miles away. I remember living in Atlanta, when a NC station on 750 with only 500 watts interfered with WSB *in* Atlanta. Even somewhat close to the station ( WSB) you could hear that station in the background. So you say this is acceptable? Hmmmmmmmm ??
I remember working in Greenville, SC when I started with the phone company in 1974. When I would go through Mauldin SC, a Greenville suburb, at night WFBC (then) 1330 on pattern change would get noticeably louder. Now, at power change time you hear it through the jumble of other flea powered stations that got night authority, but the signal for the average listener would be very annoying. I remember WIS, now being WVOC being perfectly fine at night in Newberry, The few stations that got low night power on 560 make it unlistenable most nights. Even when I lived 5 miles from WVOC in a minor null, but well over city grade, the signal had at least one station underneath at night,
A very pedantic Powell ( the real one )
