NAB engineering did a private report, about those folks
wanting dramatic power increases.

Here's what they said, and I'm paraphrasing....

"We simply cannot support this initiative, due to the large
amount of residential growth around our country's high
powered stations. The public outcry from the added
power levels found in their homes, would make such an
effort nearly insurmountable."

And what you are really talking about, at 60 miles from the
tower, is 3 dB, right?

I agree that the Class A's-where possible, due to adjacent-channel
situations here in the East, like 1010-1020-1030, 1050-1060 and
1200-1210-1220 and so forth-be allowed 100 kW 24/7. I'd take solid
groundwave coverage over skywave any time. Wondering why longwave as a
broadcast band never caught on here. I understand about atmospheric
noise and such, but would think 100 kW at those frequencies would give a
rock-steady signal to a COL and surrounding areas. Just woolgathering here.
