The so called mega-conglomerates do not spend a dime of their own money.
5.1 sound and 3D are paid by sponsors like Sony, Samsung, Sharp, LG,
etc. The equipment rented and the same trucks and equipment are used by
all the major networks. Very little is owned or maintained internally.
Most major sports events including golf and NASCAR are broadcast in 5.1
surround sound. Dual microphones would not be found because the extra
sound sources are ambiance. Announce is almost always center channel.
The 5.1 is down mixed to stereo to be backward compatible with older TVs.
