The choice is highly dependent upon your desired application(s) and your budget.
For example, I have a handheld Garmin GPSMap 60CSx (now discontinued) that I use in the car, on bicycle, and hiking. It doesn't have voice prompts (just beeps), and a relatively small screen.
It serves my purposes very well, but it drives my girlfriend crazy.
Her GPS (also Garmin; I don't recall the model) is intended for car use only, has voice prompts, live traffic information, and a large screen. This type is best for her.
I believe both units provide choice of Datum (e.g., NAD 27) and units.
Consumer Reports reviews a number of different GPS types regularly. Happy hunting.
