I suspect you are speaking of operating system upgrades, such as going 
from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Those are ineed major changes, and one reason 
the Rivendell developers moved to CEntOS is that it is supported for seven 
years, so you're not likely to need an OS upgrade during the life 
expectancy of the machine.

There are also routine security updates, which almost never break anything 
unless they include a new kernel and you have compiled your own drivers 
that are keyed to a specific kernel. That is a problem for Rivendell users 
who use AudioScience sound cards with some flavors of Linux (not CentOS, 
though, or Debian 6.0).
