Dana,

Towerstream is a WiMAX provider, same as someone like Clear(wire).
Nothing special about them, why pay them for the service when you can
do it yourself and have full control over the link? 3.65Ghz is a
simple license process anyone can do. And $500/mo for 5Mbps? Doing it
yourself you can have the whole pipe (60Mbit) to yourself for the cost
of the license (all of 200 bucks per tower location) and equipment
(under $1k in radios).

Also, Towerstream isn't available everywhere it looks like. A good
business model, much like Clear, but not a nationwide thing yet. I
used Clearwire here when they were launching their network, they
administratively control it from Florida, and they refused (even on a
business link) to open ports for me to use my Tieline equipment or
anything of the sort. Instantly threw it away. Not sure if Towerstream
is a bit more compromising in that area or not, but the reason for a
licensed link is total control. A nationwide license using a third
party doesn't give you that control.
