A few comments. The best way to use Gmail on a local email client is to
use IMAP as it solves the synchronization problem.
The second point to consider is to avoid using any ISP mail services
directly. There are services such as DYNDNS that provide an alternate
SMTP server which can be setup to work on an alternate port since port
25 is often blocked by ISPs. For inbound, set up a domain and either
forward to an existing mailbox or use a company like Network Solutions
to provide one or more mailboxes along with domain management. Both
companies are top drawer, have never been blocked, do a great job of
blocking true spam and makes the use of multiple devices with separate
customized accounts easier. The cost is not that much but the
convenience and reliability is great.
