Okay, I am gonna defend Madonna here. I am not a big fan of hers
(although I do like some of her 1980s hits); in fact, in many regards, I
found her performance to be an example of wretched excess. But let's be
honest-- so much of the hoop-la surrounding the Super Bowl is also
excessive and designed mainly to sell products and boost the drama of
the Sunday match-up. Her performance fit right in-- it was
exhilarating, over the top, energetic, and yes, it had people talking
and it got huge ratings for NBC, like it or not. And while some people
sniped at her, which is certainly their right, I admire her for being
willing to stay in such good shape (after all, she is in her 50s) that
she can do dance routines and sing her hits so enthusiastically in front
of millions of fans-- she is continuing to do what she loves, and why
not? She's not hurting anyone, and she is certainly making
choreographed dancing popular all over again!
