   "Speculation is not required, if made with 3/4" or larger materials they will surely cover way 
more than 6 MHz flatly, but they are usually mounted vertically, if mounted horizontally they 
produce a figure 8 pattern.  They are simply an end fed dipole. (often homemade with copper tubing)
   A permanent emergency antenna would normally be crossed dipoles fed 90 degrees out of phase.
