It is a good idea. It wasn't better judgement to stop it. It's no 
more confusing that listening to a few people in a room and being 
able, via two ears, to judge their position. Unless the panning was 
severe right and left (ping pong effect) a slight pan either side of 
center is more natural.

The devil, and the ratings, are in the details. Did the PD give you 
any reason why it was confusing? Were the levels all consistent?
