Yeah the RDS is pretty buggy on that basic factory radio. I presume they haven't really updated the radio yet.

I have found that when the RDS quits, I can scan for a station that is running just their call letters rather than dynamic program info, and after it locks on and displays those calls, I can hit the preset for my station and the RDS will start working again.

For a few minutes.

I'm not impressed with the high blend, like your friend. My car has a Pioneer sub in the back (factory), and it plays nice and low on FM, but I can't get it to sound balanced using the available EQ controls. It's annoying at worst, and I definitely don't try to tune any of my processors with this car as a reference. It would be way too thin on any normal system.
