Jeff Glass sayeth: "Any advantage had by connecting the printer directly to the network? I'm hesitant to put any more time into this loser HP Printer.

"Ten years ago, I lost most of my hair getting their (6ESi ?) LaserJet printers to work out of the box. Some things never change. This printer is a real turkey. HP tech support is without a clue."

Using a computer as a print server is, in general, problematical enough that I usually just hang a USB print server on the thing (if it doesn't have a print server built in) and go from there. It's easy, cheap, saves mountains of time, and if you give the print server a static IP address anyone can print to it with a minimum of setup time. You also don't worry about someone shutting down the computer that's acting as a print server, or rebooting and leaving it at a login prompt. It's available full-time.
