I've had good luck with the Knoppix 5.1 boot CD.  It often can read
defective hard drives that Windows won't read.  In a few situations I've
been able to recover almost every file from a bad hard drive.  Download is
free, so the only cost was that of a single CD-R.  Half a buck, maybe.
