What they could (should?) have done with that license was convert it to a
higher powered commercial daytimer on another frequency (the FCC would have
allowed this) and then sold it. That way the College would have made a few
hundred grand (remember, stations were still worth $$$ then). I'm sure there
are some 5 kW (or higher) AM allotments near Grove City that could have been
done either non-d or with a simple DA.

yep, from a practical perspective  ( which is the only way the  
university could look at it) everything he said no doubt is true.  
from a radio romanticists POV ( which is the only way I can look at  
it) , it's hard to see a station licensed since 1922 go out with a  
cough and a wheeze and a loud THUNK into the trash like that.
