Well, Craig... the thing I like about using MP3 is the tagging...

There's this nifty program called

MP3Tag

that will read and write IDv1, V2, and APE tags.  Since SPL uses the APE 
tag, extended, for keeping track of tracks...

Space-saving isn't a concern - I have a total of just under a terabyte 
of HDs available.  Using high-rate MP3 keeps from having to switch 
codecs, among other things...

If I were to do anything, it'd be to simply leave everything as 44 kHz 
sampled 16-bit linear WAV files.

I haven't found a tag editor that compares to the ease of use of MP3Tag 
for FLAC or OGG.
