There are two reasons for the grease.
One, is lubrication obviously, and the other is to coat the
surfaces to prevent oxidation.
Petroleum greases will lose the lighter components to evaporation over time,
causing what remains to harden, becoming more glue than lube.
Best, wash them with a good degreaser, then re-lube with something more
modern that won't evaporate.
Any present day 10W30 should be good.
