I reject your advice and substitute my own :-)

Linux is stable, I'll admit, but Windows XP and (it would appear) Win 7 are
rock-hard.  If the only apps to run are the encoder and decoder and the
included firewalls are tightened down, security is not an issue and the
platform will be stable.
