Yes, it is.  I quite agree.
 
I always liked the Nakamichi MR-2.  It used a cam to push up the pinch roller instead of a solenoid, so it didn't go "CLUNK!" like the TASCAMs.  But, the best-sounding cassette deck of all time has to be the SAE C-102.  It had a drawer like we now have for a CD player, and the cassette was laid in horizontally.  I bought 3 of them for the price I would have paid for 2 TASCAMs, and was glad I did.
