Jim,
Remotes here don't work anymore. Both stations here in our town got rid of our vans. The clients were getting smart, if they didn't see results out of that remote, they would never buy a regular ad schedule from your station again. That's why we stopped doing remotes. Live and Local Remotes can burn you! We learned the hard way back in 2004! The client won't advertise on radio again. He says word of mouth is the best advertising.
There was a website a few years ago that Cumulus did called "nomoreremotes.com" The website made sense. This is not 1957 anymore, where when a station did a remote, people swarmed all over the station's van, remote gear, and D.J. You just don't get those results in many areas anymore.
It may still work in some areas, but not here. Nashville Radio has always had a tough time in the past, and it's just getting worse, especially for the corporate groups that own broadcast properties in the Nashville area. Citadel has two FM's here. They were always on remote, live and local. Now, their vans stay parked. The same for the Cumulus owned stations here. They have a fleet of vans, cars, etc. that they don't use much anymore.
Since both Gallatin, Tennessee stations stopped doing remotes, we have only had 1 or 2 of the Nashville FM's come in to try to do remotes. One was a car dealership. After the remote, my sales guy asked the client how it turned out, did you get any results? The answer was no, and I won't spend my money doing radio remotes anymore.
Jim, those two Great Magic Words can kill you if the client sees no results!
