My 2 cents:  I feel the public doesn't understand what we're doing to be louder than each other and the fact that we do it is ridiculous (to me).  The public also doesn't understand all those liners, positioning statements and the like.  That's the repetitious talk that turns them off.   Heavy processing drives 'em off, too.  Frustration with all of that is why I have the hobby www.FunRadio.us.  If you give it a listen, be sure to click on the Winamp box.  That's playing the stream encoded by Opticodec-PC SE Version 2.2.20.  
 
Today's technology makes high quality audio so easy to achieve, yet, we're bound and determine to screw the audio up.
 
And, can someone please stop the square wave insanity on modern CD's?
