They're an import from the telephone company. Surely you've been in a
telephone "office", as they call it ? They had rows of building-long floor
to ceiling frames of them where the cables came in from subscribers and were
jumpered to the switching equipment.
The c. 1950 WE 25B  had them for customer interface connections mounted in
heavy steel breakout boxes that attached to the wall on each sideof the
console,  with umbilicals of inch or larger aluminum mesh covered cables
that plugged in to the bottom of the console chassis using large round
multiplugs. As with their telephones, it was as if WE didn't want the user
to work on equipment, even when they owned it.......
