OF COURSE, XM and (RU) Sirius radio COULD sound good, but they limit
the data rate to the point where they don't.
PLUS, they use inexpensive codecs that make the situation even worse.
They have decided to have more channels and less quality. Have you
listened to the traffic and weather channels? I played around with
some early codecs in the early 80s, and turned them down to two bit
encoding as a test and a joke. It COULD be understood. I don't think
they sounded worse than Sirius/XM local traffic and weather or the
"911" EAS channel. Man, they are really awful.
But the standard channels are not much better. They don't care. They
have defined the market, and now that the FCC stupidly and illegally
allowed them to merge, we have no hope for improvement. So, rather
than competition, we will have the slow slide into death. Oh, well.
