Do you talk to each other simplex?

If you are using repeaters, you are depending on back-up power.

Sadly, few amateur repeaters have back-up power.

Most of mine do, but that is a broadcast association.  I am sapping  
off the generator of a broadcast station.

You need to go to six meters or even HF in order to be able to  
reliably speak with your wife.
