There were numerous things wrong with the reception so I called to complain
and my complaint was routed to their chief engineer. Not anticipating a job
out of the deal, he hired me as a bench tech and floating helper.

one afternoon when his scanner broke squelch at the street cut. Upon closer
inspection, the aluminum coax had not been laid deep enough and had been
about half exposed to traffic running over it for years. Was quite a site
to see the center conductor laying in a very dirty cradle of foam and
aluminum, which explained a lot of problems in the area.
That problem jumped ahead of several hundred other similar problems :-)
